Description of the seminar:
The German attac on Poland on 1st September 1939 marked the beginning of the Second World War, in which more than 50 million people died. Commemorating this incident our traditional German-Polish-Russian History Workshop deals with exactly this topic. The starting point of the seminar will be this years’ commemoration at Westerplatte near Gdansk, at which Poles and Russians accused each other to play down their contributions to the outbreak of the war. In his speech the Polish president Lech Kaczynski critcised the former behaviour of the Sowjet Union.
At 23rd August 1939 the so-called Hitler-Stalin-Pact was signed and on 17th September the Red Army occupied the Polish Eastern territories, according to Kaczynski a “stab in the back of Poland”. Just before the Polish head of state had drawn a direct comparison between the assassination of 20.000 Polish officers by the Sowiet Union at Katyn and the Holocaust carried out by the German Nazis. On the same day the Russian secret service SWR published an announcement which said that secret documents of the Warsaw pre-war government showed Polish complicity in the outbreak of the war. Russia and its neighbours are, in addition to this, quarreling about the role of Stalin. While the Russians are proud of the Sowiet victory over Hitler-Germany 1945, the Poles and the Baltic nations believe Stalin to be directly responsible for the war. Part of the program is also a trip to Westerplatte and the former concentration camp at Stutthof. The work in international groups and with diverse methods should turn this seminar into a truly exciting experience.
